Where to stay in Phnom Penh: Best areas and hotels

Phnom Penh is an essential stop on your trip to Cambodia. Yes, it is true that the city is not particularly beautiful, however, I was very surprised for the better. Phnom Penh has many interesting places to visit that will help you learn more about the history of Cambodia.

Staying in Phnom Penh is quite cheap. In our case we stayed in a great hotel with a pool and huge family suites for just 40 euros a night with breakfast included (price for 4).

In this post I will tell you about the best areas and hotels to stay in Phnom Penh, I will add our accommodation option and I will give you some tips to get around and visit the city.

WHERE TO STAY IN PHNOM PENH: Best areas and hotels

1. Stay in Downtown Phnom Penh (Daun Penh)

Phnom Penh is a city that can be visited in a short time, it is recommended to spend 2 nights/3 days. For this reason, the most practical and intelligent thing to do is to stay in the center of the city, where most of the interesting places to visit are located, where there is entertainment, etc… despite the fact that you will have to take a tuk tuk on several occasions, from the center you can also walk among the street food stalls as you get to know the city.

In the center is where the largest hotel offer in the city is located. You have from hostels, airbnb, medium hotels to luxury hotels.

In our case we stayed at the 4-star Penh House Hotel. It is a beautiful hotel, with spacious and comfortable bedrooms, rooftop pool next to the bar/restaurant. It is great to eat, both for breakfast and for dinner. It was very cheap, in addition, the family suite for 3 people with an additional bed cost us 40 euros per night with breakfast included. (we travel in May 2022).

Other great accommodation options in central Phnom Penh include:

2. Sisowath Quay, the most luxurious option to stay in Phnom Penh

This avenue is located on the banks of the river and this is where you can find some of the best hotels in the city. The area has many restaurants and hotels located on the river bank.

It is a fairly central and pleasant area. Being an area that has become fashionable in recent years among travelers, prices are higher. Personally, I prefer the center (Daun Penh) where you can find hotels of the same category as in this area, at better prices. But if you prefer to be a bit far from the center, the streets full of people coming and going, street food stalls etc... this is a good alternative.

Some great Sisowath Quay accommodation options include:

3. Prampir Makara, an economical and comfortable area to stay in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is an economic city. So if you have a very tight budget, you can rule out the central areas and choose this area. It is about a 20-minute walk from the center, although for about 3 dollars you can get there by tuk tuk. Here you will find renovated or even new accommodation at very low prices. They are around 10-12 euros per person per day in an average hotel.
