Luang Prabang is an essential city to see in Laos. The city is relatively small and where you stay is not so important since you can take a taxi everywhere for little money. However, depending on the area you can walk to the area with restaurants, shops... The city is divided in two by the Mekong River. In one part is the historic center, a good option for where to stay in Luang Prabang, but not the only one.
In this post I tell you a little about the best areas to stay in Luang Prabang and I add some great accommodation options. If you are thinking about traveling to Laos and are organizing your trip, on the blog you have a complete travel guide to Laos with many posts that can help you organize.
WHERE TO STAY IN LUANG PRABANG: BEST AREAS AND HOTELS
You must keep in mind that Laos is a less touristy country than Cambodia, Vietnam or Thailand, so there are much fewer accommodations and the price, since there is less demand, is more expensive. However, it is still an economic country. To give you an idea of the rates, before starting, a 5-star hotel in Luang Prabang costs around 170 euros per night for a double room. A 3-star hotel is around 60-85 euros per night in a double room and you have lower category hotels that are around 40 euros per night in a double room. Most always include breakfast.
Although the city is divided in two by the Mekong River and there are accommodations on both sides, I recommend that you stay in the historic center part, where most of the tourist attractions are located, including the Royal Palace.
Historic District, the best place to stay in Luang Prabang
The area of the Luang Prabang Royal Palace, the Haw Pha Bang and the Heuan Chan Heritage House is considered the historic center. In addition, it is an area with many restaurants, street food stalls, there are several temples, museums... It is undoubtedly a very good option to stay in Luang Prabang since you will have almost everything very close and you can walk.
Great hotels to stay in the historic center of Luang Prabang:
Near Phu Vao Road
On the outskirts of the historic center you will find more modern hotels and some more luxurious ones. To get to the center you will have to take a tuk tuk or taxi and for little money you can get to the center in about 5 or 10 minutes depending on traffic. It was the option that we chose. Specifically, we stayed at the 5-star The Luang Say Residence hotel. The hotel is amazing, with a beautiful pool and garden areas, huge and comfortable rooms, with a full bathroom and 10 minutes from the center. And most importantly, with air conditioning. We found many options in the center that were not bad three stars, but none offered air conditioning and knowing that at the time we were traveling it was going to be a lot, we were clear that we preferred a hotel with this option and if, in addition, it had a pool for a dip in mid afternoon better.
In this area there are more hotels and the vast majority are much cheaper than the center.
Great accommodation options just outside the historic center of Luang Prabang:
Staying near the Elephant Conservation Center
An option close to the historic center, but much cheaper, is the entire neighborhood surrounding the elephant conservation center, located in the center of Luang Prabang. There are quite a few options where to stay, between homestays, 3 and 4 star hotels.
