Where to stay in Cairo: Best areas and hotels

Cairo is a huge city and choosing a place to stay is not easy. In the Egyptian capital there are many accommodations from which you can choose, but you have to pay a lot of attention when booking accommodation because the quality standards in Egypt are much lower than in the West. And sometimes the scores are not very helpful. In addition, it must also be taken into account that not all areas are valid, although you can find accommodation in every corner of the city, there are places that are better to avoid.

In this post I talk about the best areas and hotels to stay in Cairo.

El Cairo, Egipto

Downtown Cairo, one of the best areas to stay in Cairo

Downtown Cairo is the center of the city and is one of the most recommended places to stay in Cairo. The area is located on the eastern bank of the Nile River and was built to house official government buildings, shops and upper-class housing in the Egyptian capital.

In Downtown you can see beautiful belle époque buildings, especially around Tahrir Square and in the surrounding streets.

Although the Downtown area looks decadent, you will find large hotels and a wide range of hotels. In addition, it is a fairly safe area of the city.

Sleeping here guarantees you have several places of interest nearby such as the Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square and the Nile River.

Some great places to stay in Downtown Cairo:

Zamalek, a great neighborhood to stay in Cairo

Zamalek is a neighborhood located on Gezira Island, between the cities of Cairo and Giza and is connected to them through several bridges, including the Qasr al-Nil Bridge and the October 6 Bridge.

It is one of the most exclusive residential areas of the city. In the neighborhood there are several government buildings, embassies, shops, art galleries and restaurants.

It is a residential area for those with purchasing power. In the neighborhood not only Egyptians live but also many foreigners. It is one of the quietest and safest areas of the city.

In this area are some of the most luxurious accommodation in the city.

Garden City, the most luxurious area to stay in Cairo

Garden City, or the Garden City, is an area located near Downtown, on the east bank of the Nile River, but on the other side of Tahrir Square. It is a very good alternative where to stay in Cairo.

In this area there are some embassies such as the United States, Indonesia or Italy, in addition, there are many luxurious mansions and some of the best hotels in Cairo.

Although it is located near the Tharir square, it is a very quiet area. The accommodations are of a higher quality than in the Downtown, although the costs are also somewhat higher. However, there are accommodations for all budgets.

Another interesting alternative where to stay in Cairo is to do it in the outskirts. My favorite is near the Giza pyramids, where many accommodations offer incredible views of the pyramids from their rooms. You will be close to this place of interest, essential to see in Cairo, but located in the center of the city. If you are traveling light, an alternative is to spend one night in the suburbs and two more nights in the center of the city.

Giza, the best area to stay in Cairo near the pyramids

One of the coolest experiences is getting up at dawn and seeing the pyramids of Giza from your bedroom window. Many accommodations and of different categories offer the possibility of seeing this wonder.

From the center of the city of Cairo to the pyramids of Giza it is only 18 km. However, the traffic in the city is chaotic and it can take a little over an hour to get from Downtown to the pyramids.

If you don't mind changing your accommodation frequently, my recommendation is that you divide your days in the city in different accommodations. You stay one night in Giza, near the pyramids, and the rest of your stay in Cairo, you stay near the Downtown.
