What to eat in Mauritius, mix of cultures!

The great multiracial mix of Mauritius makes it a place with a very good and varied gastronomic offer. Indian, French and Chinese cuisine coincide in choosing rice, chicken, fish and seafood as basic ingredients. The main dishes of Mauritian food


The main dishes are made up of spicy and spicy rice dishes, meats and vegetables prepared in curry, and different fish and shellfish. Rougaille


Prepared with a local tomato variety known as pommes d'amour "love apples", as well as onions, herbs, garlic, ginger and peppers, rougaille is often served with meat and fish.



Samoussa


Triangular-shaped salty starter stuffed with meat and vegetables.


Mine Frit


Stir-fried noodles are the best known and most appreciated dish in Chinese cuisine. The noodles are cooked in a large wok with soy sauce, vegetables and meat.


Rottis


Pancake made from wheat flour that can be found in different varieties. The most popular, faratha, is enriched with ghee (semi-fluid Indian buffalo butter).

There are different types of rottis, the most popular being the chapatti (long and light) and the dholl poori (soft and filled with grains and spices).


Dhalpuri


Pancake made with lentil flour filled with a vegetable curry. It is usually taken accompanied by homemade lemonade.


Gateau-piment


Ring-shaped salty appetizer prepared with lentils and peppers.


Biryani


Basmati rice cooked with spices and meat or fish. It is usually served accompanied by cucumber salad.


Heart of Palm Salad


Known as the millionaires' salad, the heart of palm served in a salad or cooked on the grill is a specialty of Creole cuisine.


Fish a la vindaye


Fish marinated in a sauce of vinegar, mustard, turmeric with onion, garlic, ginger and peppers. It is a meal that is served cold and is usually accompanied with rice.
