How to get from Vang Vieng to Vientiane (and vice versa)

Until recently, the only option to get from Vang Vieng to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, was to do it by van. It was a journey of about 4 hours by road, passing through some mountain pass. But since 2021 there is another, much more comfortable and faster alternative to go from Vang Vieng to Vientiane. In this post I talk to you about the options you have to make this journey and I add some tips on how to get around Laos.

HOW TO GET FROM VANG VIENG TO VIENTIANE, LAOS

The train, the best option to get from Vang Vieng to Vientiane

Until 2021, the only option to move comfortably around Laos without driving yourself was to do so with minivans. But since 2021 there are already trains available for many routes including the route from Vang Vieng to Vientiane. This journey lasts almost 3 hours. The seats are comfortable and spacious and you can choose between first class (approximate ticket cost 20 euros) or second class (approximate ticket cost 15 euros). The difference between one class and another is minimal. It is advisable to book in advance online so as not to be left without a ticket. There are two trains daily.

Minivan, an alternative to go from Vang Vieng to Vientiane

If you can't fit your itinerary with the train schedules (something I recommend), the minivan is an alternative. This was our choice, because when we traveled to Laos they were still finishing building the train. The journey takes about 4 and a half hours, as long as you don't encounter much traffic. Along the way there are two 15-minute stops to stretch your legs, go to the bathroom or have a quick drink. This option is much cheaper, costing around 8 euros each way, and it is advisable to book online in advance.

By rental car

It is possible to rent a car in Laos in some cities. Not all have this option. If the city has an airport, you can find some companies. If your intention is to rent a car, you can rent it in Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Pakse. Little by little more options are opening up. From Vang Vieng there is no this option right now, but if you arrive in Luang Prabang by plane, for example, you can rent it there and return it in Vientiane or Pakse. You will have to calculate your arrival and departure city to know if you have this option. The cost of a car rental in Laos is around 40 euros per day. It is a good option if you are traveling with more than 2 people.

By motorcycle, an option to go from Vang Vieng to Vientiane

Another option to get around Laos is by rental motorcycle. Although I do not recommend traveling long distances by motorcycle, you have this option for about 15 euros a day. The journey from Vang Vieng to Vientiane takes about 8-9 hours. You must keep in mind that it will take twice as long as by car, since the motorcycles must stop several times. It is advisable if you go by motorcycle, that you spend the night on the way, so that it does not become so heavy.

There are unofficial places that usually ask for around 8 euros per day. Although keep in mind, if you have an accident it will not cover you anything.

My recommendation is that you manage long journeys by train or minivan and to get around the city and surrounding areas, rent a motorcycle or get around by taxi or tuk tuk.
